Varkala's red laterite cliff above the Arabian Sea, Kerala

An Oyestore Destination

Varkala

The original surf town, right at home.

72 Hours Mid tier Bangalore → Kovalam → Varkala

A red cliff dropping straight into the Arabian Sea, cafés strung along its edge, and - unusually for Kerala - a beach you don't have to leave the clifftop to see.

Varkala is arguably the single most photographed spot in the state, and the odd thing is the photos undersell it. The laterite cliff runs for almost two kilometres, cafés and shops built right along the edge, Papanasam Beach directly below reachable by a short path or a lift. It's also one of the few beach towns in India where a sacred bathing ghat and a surf break share the same stretch of sand without either one feeling out of place.

This chapter runs it properly - a stop at Kovalam's lighthouse on the way down, 72 hours on and around the cliff, and a route back through the quieter backwaters north of it that most day-trippers never see.

Where to Wander

The cliff, and
what's around it

Seven stops across the full route - from the lighthouse on the way in to the fort on the way out.

01

Kovalam Lighthouse & Hawah Beach

The stop on the way in

A striped red-and-white lighthouse against open sea - one of the most recognizable single images in Kerala tourism - right above Hawah Beach, the town's best sunset spot.

02

Varkala Cliff

Arguably the most photographed spot in Kerala

Nearly two kilometres of clifftop café hopping, ocean on one side the entire way. This is the centre of gravity for the whole trip - budget most of your unstructured time right here.

03

Papanasam Beach

Directly below the cliff

A sacred bathing ghat and a genuinely good surf beach, sharing the same sand - sunrise or sunset both work, depending on whether you want the pilgrims or the surfers.

04

Kappil Lake & the Edava-Paravur Backwaters

A short drive north

Where the cliff crowd thins out - a quiet lake and backwater stretch most day-trippers never make it to, worth the detour on day three.

05

Anchuthengu Fort

Further north still

An old East India Company outpost on the coast - a genuine piece of colonial-era history that almost nobody visiting Varkala on a quick trip ever gets to.

Clifftop cafés along Varkala's red laterite cliff

Two kilometres of clifftop, ocean on one side the entire way.

On the Table

Kerala coast, plus
whatever the cliff picked up

Decades of travellers have turned the cliff café scene genuinely international - alongside food that's unmistakably Kerala.

01

Karimeen & appam with stew

The Kerala coast, done right

Pearl-spot fish, grilled or in a light coconut curry, alongside lace-thin appam and a vegetable or meat stew - the meal that's genuinely, unmistakably Kerala, best eaten with a cliff view.

02

Clifftop multi-cuisine cafés

The entire cliff edge

Israeli, Italian, continental, and everything in between - the same long-stay-traveller effect that shaped Gokarna's menus happened here too, just with better sea views.

03

A toddy shop stop

En route, Kerala-style

Fresh, mildly fermented palm toddy with a proper Kerala snack spread alongside it - a genuine local tradition, not staged for visitors.

04

Fresh tender coconut, constantly

Every stall on the cliff

The default drink of the whole trip - cut fresh in front of you, cheaper and better than anything bottled.

A sacred bathing ghat and a surf break share the same beach here - and somehow neither one feels out of place.

What to Do

72 hours,
properly spent

Every hour of it earns its place - there's genuinely enough here to fill three full days.

01

An optional surf or SUP lesson

Papanasam's break is genuinely good for beginners - no experience required, boards and instructors both available right on the beach.

02

An Ayurveda spa slot

For the non-surfers, or anyone who just wants a slower afternoon - genuine Kerala Ayurveda, not a resort spa knockoff.

03

Sunset from the cliff, every evening

Non-negotiable, same as Pondicherry's promenade - it's free, it's five minutes from anywhere on the cliff, and it's the best hour of every day here.

04

A quiet backwater detour

Kappil Lake and the Edava-Paravur backwaters on day three - the trip's built-in reset, away from the cliff crowd entirely.

Not a Checklist

Varkala, but not the postcard version.

5 ways we're doing Varkala.

The Cliff

The cliff.
The view.
No filter needed.

Two kilometres of red laterite dropping straight into the Arabian Sea. This is the whole reason Varkala's on everyone's feed - we just get you here in person.

  • Varkala Cliff Nearly two kilometres of clifftop café-hopping, ocean on one side the entire way - the centre of gravity for the whole trip.
  • Papanasam Beach Directly below the cliff - a sacred bathing ghat and a genuinely good surf break, sharing the same sand.
  • South Cliff The quieter half - fewer cafés, same drop, actually room to hear the waves.

02

Get Wet

Get wet.
Get salty.
Do it again.

The sea here isn't wallpaper. Paddle out, catch a wave badly, laugh about it, go again.

  • Surf Lessons Papanasam's break is genuinely beginner-friendly - board, instructor, zero experience required.
  • Open-Water Swimming Wherever conditions say yes - the sea decides the plan here, not a checklist.
  • Kappil Beach Quieter water, a short drive north - where the backwater almost meets the ocean.

03

Take the Long Way

No straight lines.
No rush.
Take the long way.

The best hour of the trip won't be on the cliff. It'll be somewhere the coconut trees close in and the main road disappears.

  • Kappil Backwaters A boat ride where the only sound left is the paddle.
  • Ponnumthuruthu Island A tiny temple island reachable only by country boat - Varkala's own Golden Island.
  • Varkala Tunnel A century-old hand-carved British-era shortcut linking the north and south cliffs.
04

There's More to Kerala

Beaches are nice.
We found more.

Varkala had a temple and a bathing ghat long before it had a single café. The cliff's the headline - this is everything underneath it.

  • Janardhana Swamy Temple A centuries-old shrine right by the cliff - Varkala was a pilgrimage stop long before it was a surf town.
  • Sivagiri Mutt A hilltop ashram founded by Sree Narayana Guru - the quiet, spiritual counterpart to the cliff's café buzz.
  • Anchuthengu Fort An old East India Company outpost on the coast - genuine colonial-era history almost nobody visiting Varkala gets to.

05

Slow Down

Not everything
needs an itinerary.

Some of this trip is surf lessons and boat rides. Some of it is just a coffee that takes forty-five minutes because nobody's rushing you.

  • Ayurveda Genuine Kerala Ayurveda, not a resort spa knockoff.
  • Sunset Walks Free, five minutes from anywhere on the cliff - the best hour of every day here.
  • Cliffside Cafés Karimeen, appam and stew, then whatever's next door - the whole edge is basically one long menu.

And that's before we even tell you what happens after dark.

Dates

To be announced

Varkala is one of Oyestore's four original everything-included destinations - real, hosted, run start to finish. Exact dates aren't locked in yet; we're not going to invent them just to look further along than we are. What's real: the route, the price tier, and a WhatsApp line that'll tell you the truth the moment dates are confirmed.

Still thinking?
Ask yourself this.

You know the cliff now, you know the lighthouse stop, you know exactly which beach shares a bathing ghat with a surf break. The only thing left standing between you and that view is one message.

  • How many times have you seen that cliff in someone else's photos and not your own?
  • What's actually keeping Varkala on your "someday" list instead of your calendar?
  • What's actually stopping you from asking one question on WhatsApp right now?

No pressure, no hard sell - just real answers from the Oyestore team, same day.
