Om Beach's cliffside coves in Gokarna, Karnataka

Gokarna

Your dry 72 hours has a cliff view.

72 Hours Mid tier Fly to Goa + cab

A temple town that happens to have four of the best cliffside beaches on the Karnataka coast, all of them reachable only on foot.

Gokarna gets compared to Goa constantly, usually by people who've never actually walked the cliff trail between Om Beach and Half Moon. It's a fair comparison up to a point - same coastline, same Arabian Sea, same golden light - and completely unfair after that. There's no traffic on these beaches because there's no road to them. You get there by climbing over a headland, which means every cove still feels like something you found rather than something you were driven to.

The town itself is a genuine pilgrimage site, built around the Mahabaleshwara Temple - so the "detox" isn't just a marketing line. Alcohol-free days aren't unusual here, and the whole place runs at a slower, quieter register than its party-town reputation suggests.

Where to Wander

Four beaches,
one cliff trail

Gokarna's whole geography is built around a single coastal walk - here's what's on it.

01

Om Beach

Named for its shape from above

The most photographed cove on this stretch of coast - two crescents of sand meeting at a point, ringed by cliffside shacks. Busy by midday, genuinely peaceful at sunrise. The hammocks strung between palms here are exactly as good as they look in photos.

02

Kudle Beach

A 20-minute cliff walk from Om

Longer, less crowded, and closer to Gokarna town, which makes it the easier of the two to reach if you're not up for the full trail. Same cliffside-shack culture, slightly mellower crowd.

03

Half Moon & Paradise Beach

Further along the trail, on foot or by boat

The two furthest coves - smaller, quieter, no shacks at all in Paradise's case. These are the ones worth the extra walk specifically because most people turn back before they get there.

04

Mahabaleshwara Temple

Gokarna town

One of the oldest and most significant Shiva temples on the Karnataka coast, and the actual reason the town exists. Worth a quiet visit even if the beaches are the plan - it's the other half of what makes Gokarna a genuinely different kind of trip.

Cliffside shacks above Om Beach, Gokarna

The cliff trail between Om and Kudle - twenty minutes, no road, no traffic.

On the Table

Shack food &
backpacker cafés

Decades of long-stay travellers have shaped Gokarna's food scene into something you won't find at most Indian beach towns.

01

Cliffside shack seafood

Om & Kudle Beach

Fresh catch grilled or curried right where you're sitting, with your feet basically in the sand and the cliff drop right behind the kitchen. This is the default meal here, and it's a good one.

02

Falafel, hummus & the backpacker menu

Every beach shack, oddly enough

Decades of travellers passing through have left a permanent mark on the menus - hummus, falafel wraps and banana pancakes sit right next to the seafood thali, no irony intended. It's genuinely part of Gokarna's identity now, not a gimmick.

03

A proper detox brunch

Sunrise-trek reward

Fresh fruit, coconut water straight off the tree, and a brunch spread built for people who've just come off a sunrise trek or a yoga session, not a night out. This is the "detox" the whole tagline is named for.

04

Gokarna town's temple-street food

Near Mahabaleshwara Temple

Away from the beaches, the town itself runs on simple, excellent South Indian vegetarian food - dosas, filter coffee, the kind of unfussy meal that pairs well with a temple visit.

No road reaches these beaches - which is exactly why they still feel like the ones you found, not the ones everyone was driven to.

What to Do

Slower, on
purpose

Gokarna's whole appeal is the pace - here's how the 72 hours actually fill up.

01

A sunrise trek

Up before the heat, onto the cliff trail while it's still cool and mostly empty - the single best window of the whole trip.

02

A yoga session on the sand

Most beach shacks can point you to a morning class, no booking drama required - just show up.

03

The full Om-to-Kudle cliff walk

Do it once at least, ideally both directions on different days - golden hour going one way, early morning the other.

04

Hammock time, unapologetically

This is genuinely a large part of the itinerary here, and nobody's pretending otherwise.

Dates

To be announced

Gokarna is one of the Flagship Four - the four destinations Oyestore actually runs, and the only ones. Exact dates aren't locked in yet; we're not going to invent them just to look further along than we are. What's real: the route, the price tier, and a WhatsApp line that'll tell you the truth the moment dates are confirmed.

Still thinking?
Ask yourself this.

You know the cliff trail now, you know which beach to skip the crowds on, you know brunch is non-negotiable. The only thing standing between you and a hammock at Om Beach is one message.

  • When's the last time 72 hours actually felt like it slowed you down instead of wearing you out?
  • How many more months can Om Beach stay a "someday"?
  • What's actually stopping you from asking one question on WhatsApp right now?

No pressure, no hard sell - just real answers from the Oyestore team, same day.
